January is the first month of the year—a time for fresh beginnings, setting intentions, and embracing new experiences. For Tai Chi Club, it was a month filled with happiness through a series of creative activities in our community.
Cultural Sharing

Tai Chi Club expanded its cultural outreach by hosting a Chinese Calligraphy Show and Workshop at the EBRP Main Library. The exhibition featured calligraphy in five major styles, allowing attendees to appreciate the beauty and history of Chinese script.
Following the showcase, we led a soft brush calligraphy workshop, where participants had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Chinese writing, from mastering brush strokes to forming characters with balance and precision. Much like Tai Chi, calligraphy emphasizes mindfulness, control, and fluidity—offering a meditative and enriching experience.
Community Performance

On the first day of lunar-solar new year, Tai Chi Club had the honor of performing at Glasgow Middle School’s celebration. Representing the club, Jie Gu delivered a unique Tai Chi fusion performance, blending Taiji Fan, Taiji Hand Form, and Taiji Sword into a dynamic routine. The smooth transitions, the sharp energy of the fan, and the elegant sword techniques introduced the beauty and depth of Tai Chi to the students and faculty.
This event was more than just a performance—it was an opportunity to inspire a younger generation, showcasing Tai Chi as both an art form and a physical exercise while celebrating Chinese culture in an engaging and interactive way. Jie will return to the school for more PE sessions next month.
Thriving Classes

Beyond special events, our regular Tai Chi classes at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library and the LSU Hilltop Arboretum got off to a strong start this year. January’s sessions were filled with energy and enthusiasm, as participants embraced the practice with dedication. Whether newcomers or seasoned practitioners, many shared how Tai Chi has helped them with balance, stress relief, and overall well-being.
Practicing Tai Chi in these welcoming public spaces fosters not just personal growth but also a sense of community. The shared experience of moving together, breathing in sync, and enjoying the peacefulness of nature or the library’s open space makes these classes truly special.
Thanks to Yao for taking the class picture! We have been picture-less for months. 🙂
A Once-in-a-Century Snow Day: Tai Chi in a Winter Wonderland

January 21, 2025, brought a breathtaking and rare event to Baton Rouge—a hundred-year snow. Real, powdery snowflakes fell like soft feathers, transforming the city into a serene winter wonderland. Instead of retreating indoors, our Tai Chi friends embraced the moment, continuing their practice amid the snow days. The crisp air, the peaceful white landscape, and the slow, flowing movements of Tai Chi created an unforgettable experience. Practicing in nature is always special, but practicing in the snow—feeling its quiet beauty and gentle touch—made it truly magical and memorable.
Looking Ahead
As we step further into 2025, Tai Chi Club remains committed to promoting wellness, cultural appreciation, and community engagement at no cost to participants. Whether you’re looking to learn Tai Chi, explore Chinese calligraphy, or simply connect with like-minded individuals, we invite you to join us. Let’s continue this year with purpose, movement, and mindfulness. Stay tuned for more exciting events ahead!
