From Practice to Performance: When Hard Work Blossoms in Spring

March is a season of renewal—a time when seeds planted with patience begin to bloom. For our Tai Chi club, this spring marks a beautiful transformation: what once were quiet, steady routines have blossomed into expressive, heartfelt performances.

Over the years, we have been planting these seeds with dedication and passion. Since November 2023, the 24 Movements Tai Chi handform has been offered multiple times at the Main Library, creating a strong foundation for both new and returning practitioners. Through the 2024–2025 seasons, the 32 Sword routine I shared with our community extended our practice into a flowing expression of strength and elegance. In the summer and fall of 2025, the simplified Tai Chi Kung Fu fan routine brought energy, rhythm, and creativity to our community.

As we stepped into 2026, our focus shifted—from learning movements to shaping performances. Every gesture, every transition, and every breath became part of a larger artistic expression. Our performance team has worked diligently to refine each movement, transforming practice into something not only precise, but truly beautiful to watch.

The Art Behind the Performance

A meaningful performance is more than movement—it is the harmony of motion, music, and spirit.

For the sword routine, we were fortunate to receive support from the Main Library class, featuring live music by jazz saxophonist Eric Whitefield. This unique collaboration blends traditional Chinese martial arts with modern jazz expression. The live saxophone adds a soulful, improvisational layer, creating an atmosphere that is refined, unexpected, and deeply captivating—truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

For the fan routine, our team carefully selected the theme song “Iron Will, Devoted Heart.” With the help of team members specializing in music, we chose this powerful martial arts soundtrack for its heroic and uplifting qualities. Its bold, resonant melody captures courage, determination, and inner strength—perfectly amplifying the dynamic energy of the fan routine. The result is a performance that feels both powerful and emotionally moving.

For the hand form, we selected “Endless Love” from The Myth. Its gentle, lyrical melody brings a sense of calm and reflection. This music allows the performers to express softness, grace, and inner peace, enhancing the meditative nature of Tai Chi. During the tea festival, this piece created a serene and harmonious environment, inviting the audience into a shared moment of stillness.

Three Performances, Three Experiences

Each piece offers a different way to experience Tai Chi:

  • The fan routine energizes the spirit with strength and determination
  • The sword routine captivates with elegance and soulful expression
  • The hand form soothes with calm, balance, and grace

Together, they create a rich and immersive journey—one that reflects the many dimensions of Tai Chi.

A Shared Success

Our performances played a meaningful role in bringing the traditional tea ceremony to life. The combination of movement, music, and cultural tradition created something truly special—an experience that was not only beautiful to watch, but also accessible and inspiring.

Tai Chi is unique in that it is easy to begin, beneficial to health, and open to everyone. What we present on stage is not out of reach—it is something anyone can learn, practice, and one day perform.

Looking Ahead

The tea festival will return, and with it, new opportunities to grow, connect, and create.

We warmly invite you to join us—whether as a participant, a volunteer, or a supporter. Bring your curiosity, your energy, and your talent. Together, we can continue planting seeds that will blossom into even more beautiful moments next year.

Because in Tai Chi, every small step, practiced with care, eventually becomes something extraordinary.

Proud Announcement

Even with a busy schedule filled with many responsibilities, I made time to complete the filming of the final two sessions of the 32 Sword routine.

Movement 28-29

Movement 30-32

This milestone would not have been possible without the encouragement I received along the way. I am especially grateful to Joseph Freedman, who has consistently provided thoughtful feedback on my videos—offering insights on movement quality, applications, and clear orientation. His support through emails has truly motivated me to keep improving and continue sharing.

With the continued encouragement from our Main Library community, as well as friends both online and in person, I am inspired to develop more instructional content and create even stronger performances as we look ahead to 2027. We are excited to grow together and offer additional class opportunities for everyone interested. At our Tai Chi club, there is no cost to join—only a shared commitment to quality, where friendship blossoms and health is harvested.

Due to the Easter holiday, the Main Library will be closed on April 5. I plan to use this short break to thoughtfully prepare the schedule for upcoming advanced classes. Our goal is to finalize an expanded program—both at the Main Library and beyond—by April 19, 2026. Please stay tuned for updates!
