Introduction
The 38-Movement Tai Chi Fuchen form was created by Chinese martial arts master Ma Chunxi (马春喜) and was already being widely practiced by the early 2010s. A precise year of creation does not appear to be reliably documented.
A fuchen (拂尘) is a traditional Chinese fly whisk consisting of a short handle with long fibers or horsehair. Historically associated with Daoist and Buddhist traditions, it was later adapted as a distinctive martial arts weapon.
This form combines Tai Chi’s smooth, circular movements and coordinated weight shifts with characteristic fuchen techniques such as sweeping, coiling, pulling, flicking, shaking, and whipping. Its movements are graceful and flowing yet technically versatile, blending the qualities of the sword, saber, whip, and dart. The form develops coordination, flexibility, balance, and whole-body control while offering strong visual and cultural appeal. Fuchen background and traditional techniques.
