Introduction

The 8 Movement Taijiquan is a simplified foundational Tai Chi routine developed as an introductory practice form to support beginners entering standardized Taijiquan training. It was designed to distill essential principles of Tai Chi into a short, accessible structure, making it easier for new practitioners to understand basic movement patterns, coordination, and body alignment before progressing to longer competition routines.

The form focuses on core Tai Chi fundamentals such as relaxation, weight shifting, posture control, and smooth, continuous movement. With a concise sequence and clear structure, it allows learners to build confidence while developing essential skills needed for more advanced standardized routines. Although simplified in form, it still reflects key internal principles of Taijiquan and serves as an important stepping stone in systematic training.

Today, the 8 Movement Taijiquan is commonly used in beginner training programs as an entry-level routine for standardized Taijiquan practice. It provides a practical foundation for progression into longer forms such as the 24 Movement, 42 Movement competition routines, and other traditional weapon sets.

Step-by-Step Instructions

All step-by-step instruction videos were made available in the past weekend.

Commencing

Reverse Reeling of the Arms

The first core movement is a little different from the Repulse Monkeys so I named it more specifically to make it clear that this movement does not involve any foot work:) Its arm only.

Brushing Knee and Push

The 2nd core movement is brush knee and push. Basically the movement is the same as that one in the 24 movement tai chi. Instead of waking straight forward, we turn to step to the left and then, turn and step to the right. The video has been mirrored. So if you see “her” step to the left (in your view), just step to the left. Let me know how the mirror view works. If I am filming this video in back view, then all hand movement will be totally blocked by my torso.

Parting the Wild Horse’ Mane (9 min)

The 3rd core movement is Parting the wild horse’s mane. Similarly, the video was in mirrored view now with the hope that will make it easy for you to follow along.

Waving Hands like Clouds

The 4th core movement is Waving Hands like Clouds, also called cloud hands. Similarly, the video was in mirrored view now with the hope that will make it easy for you to follow along.

Standing on One Leg

Kicking with Heels

Grasping Sparrow’s Tail
